Research & Teaching Statement:

My research connects research on East Asian politics and policymaking to a growing body of cross-national studies on comparative public policy. Specifically, my research investigates the major actors dominating contemporary policymaking in Korea, analyzing the actors participating in a set of 43 policy issues discussed in today's policy community. I then compare the Korean case to the policy process of the US and the EU, demonstrating diverging and converging participation patterns across three political systems. Additionally, in a separate research project with a collaborator, I examine how distinct journalistic norms in Korea and the US determine which topics and actors get news coverage in the two countries.

At KU, I teach upper-division undergraduate courses on politics and policymaking in East Asia (POLS/EALC656 Government and Politics of East Asia), democratization and civil society in Asia (POLS/EALC565 Political Change in Asia), and applying theories of public policy cross-nationally (POLS629: Comparative Public Policy). The former two courses are also cross-listed under East Asian languages and cultures department courses. In alternate years, I teach introductory level undergraduate course in comparative politics (POLS150/151).
